ENGLISH TRANSLATION

I still remember the first song of Sally's that I listened to; it was “Seew Sah”. Since this song became popular in the 90's, Sally had sung it for no less than tens of thousands of times, and she honestly admitted it could be tiring from time to time. But when she looked back on decades of her singing career, she realized this song did carry significant meanings for her in a deeper and broader way.

Actually, she is not the only one with such feelings. For fans, when they have listened to such a classic song for more than 20 years, the song and its lyrics naturally and inevitably started carrying unique meanings for every listener too. Having been absent from the music industry for 7 years, Sally will have concerts in the Hong Kong Coliseum this coming September; in this show Sally would surely sing this classic hit, to remind everyone that, it's truly a blessing to be able to walk through life gracefully.

In the entertainment world, exposure rate is what everyone is after. All kinds of methods are indiscriminately employed to maintain one's popularity. To remain popular and well-loved after being absent from the scene for years is next to unimaginable in an industry like this, so for the Queen of Pop, Sally Yeh, indeed is a rare case here – she'd retained her reign for 30 years.

How Many Can Really See Beyond What's On The Surface?

After checking the record, I realized it had been 7 years since Sally last had her concert. For her to come out of 7 years of comfort and freedom and re-engage herself in daily exercise, dance rehearsals and singing practices, what's required, besides sheer determination, is a heart that craves for change. “In the past 7 years, I spent lots of time reading books, playing badminton; I also fell in love with renovating my house, so I'd been quite busy. Then my dad got very sick so for 1 year and a half I was taking care of him. Lots happened in these years, which made me understand more of the life's vulnerability and swiftness.”

Actually, in the past 7 years, she'd received many invitations to come back to sing, but she'd turned them all down. She admitted she didn't have the intention to return at the time. But after her 50th birthday, she started feeling differently – feeling that she should appreciate and cherish every opportunity that comes her way. “I'm 50 already. I know I'm not young anymore. Since many still look for me and want me to come back to stage, I feel if I don't grab this chance and do it now, then, in a few years, I am not sure I would still be able to produce the kind of the show that I truly want to do.” Sally laughingly said she didn't know how to celebrate birthday nowadays. She was thinking of having the show on her birthday September 30th to have a huge party with the audience to celebrate her 51st birthday, but the Hong Kong Coliseum isn't available for booking for that day, so she had to move her birthday party to September 22-24 and have an early celebration.

Passing Days Don't Guarantee True Understanding of Life

Having won the prestigious Jade Solid Gold “The Most Popular Female Singer” award for 4 consecutive years, Sally willingly stepped away from her extremely successful career for years after she married Lam so the couple could have more time to enjoy life fully. In 2002, Sally came back and released her new album. The leading song Seung Sai won her countless awards; even until today, the song still remained as one of the most popular in Karaoke. But, after her 2005 concert, Sally decided to take her exit from the industry again, and this time, it's for a long 7 years. To slow down and step away while at her prime time, Sally explained the purpose was to remind herself that, ultimately, life is a journey that one would have to walk through by oneself. “Having worked in this industry for a long time, every day you live like a Queen, always having someone taking care of you. You would gradually get used to having someone by your side and fulfilling every request of yours 24 hours a day. But in reality, the time always came when you would need to be alone, all by yourself, say, when you got back home from work. Sometimes you would suddenly wake up from the Queen lifestyle and realize ‘It's time to re-adjust myself to this normal life.’ – Balance is so much desired. It's impossible that there would always be someone attending to my needs every single minute.”

Besides not wanting to indulge herself in a spoiling lifestyle, Sally said there were also so many other things that she wanted to do. Working in the music industry always meant working non-stop and there wouldn't be any time left for oneself. “I truly love this industry, but after all, it's just my job. I started working when I was 17; in all those years, I acted in movies and produced albums; every day, except for the time when I was sleeping, I was always working. I hoped to spend time with my family and friends, and I wanted to play badminton well too. But if I decided to keep working, I wouldn't have time for any of these things. Or I could wait until later to do these things, but by then probably I would no longer have what it takes to truly engage in them… so I made my own choice. It's not necessarily the right choice, but what I'm sure of is, it's a lifestyle that's right for me.”

At Least I Still Have You By My Side

Sally married Lam in 1996, but actually they bad been friends for a long time before that. When the reporter asked Sally about her marriage, she first asked the reporter for how many years she'd been married. Upon hearing that it's actually their 16th Anniversary already, Sally was surprised and exclaimed, “Oh My God!” Their relationship went through a lot since the beginning. In recent years there had always been rumors about Sally having boyfriends too. The fact that the couple was seldom seen spending time together only made the rumors seem even more real. “We'd known each other for more than 20 years before we got married, and now we've married for 16 years. I've known him for a large part of my life. We are no longer just lovers; we are more best friends in life. Even though we are completely different in personality and do what we love to do, but, no matter what happens, we are the first one that the other would want to talk to. Even for a small matter like I have no one to eat with me, I only need to give him a call and he would come to eat with me, Haha!”
Even though the divorce rumor hadn't been true, Sally admitted they did have conflicts sometimes. “Gradually I realized, to make our relationship work, we both would need to compromise and accommodate the other. Probably because we'd known each other for so long, even if we fought, we would give the other the time and space to calm down. Probably we would stop talking for a few days and then, suddenly, we were fine again.” Obviously this long-wed couple truly understands each other's character by now; the depth and subtleness that had been cultivated in a relationship like this may not be for the outsiders to fully comprehend, but it's enough that they understand their own relationship. Seeing Sally's smile when she was talking about her husband, no explanation was needed anymore.
